Adventure at Sea
Henry Norwood left England sailing on the ship 'Virginia Merchant' heading for Jamestown in September 1649
Lucky in a sturdy constitution and seldom seasick, the young Norwood began writing in his journal the progress of their passage. It was one of the most dramatic and horrific voyage recorded in that era.
The ship was poorly designed and badly maintained, manned by rough and superstitious sailors. Norwood writes of their trials through storms and shortages, lucky breaks and outright heroism. In a voyage usually taking just over six weeks, the ship struggled for nearly four months to cross an angry Atlantic Ocean, much of it without sails or navigation. Through it all, Norwood, a friend to the captain and sometimes volunteer seaman, tells of the adventure, giving modern readers a view of the obstacles faced by those who set off to the new world.
Finally the ship limped toward an unknown shore somewhere between the settlements in New England and the farms of Virginia.
and so began their Adventure on Land
