Adventure on Land

Finally close to land, Norwood joined a party going ashore for provisions only to be left when the ship departed without them.

In the bitter cold of mid-January, nineteen people found themselves on an uninhabited barrier island with no shelter and little food. They chose Norwood as their leader.

The young Cavalier struggled to hold the weary settlers together through bitter cold and little hope. When a band of curious natives arrived it was Norwood who, thanks to his reading John Smith's accounts, was finally able to communicate their desire to meet the native 'king'.

The group was taken to the native village of Kickotank where they were treated with care and kindness. The Cavalier, in his worn but colorful coat, made a lasting impression on the native king. Later, when Norwood was finally able to return to the English settlements in Virginia, he sent his coat back as a gift for the kind natives who had saved them.

Although the natives are gone from what was Kickotank, their descendents still live in the area. ........................................................................................................................
